Recap
Glen Cove Marina on the Conowingo Reservoir was the site of the third tournament of the 2019 season and although the fog threatened to delay the launch, there was enough visibility for FOBA’s nineteen boats to blast off on time. Water temperatures hovered around sixty degrees on the main lake and the skies were cloudy with light, variable winds for most of the day. Conowingo is always an interesting event because it pits larger glass boats fishing the main lake’s deeper waters against the more nimble jet boats that find their way into the shallow, rocky rapids well north of the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station. This year’s battle did not disappoint and was a nail biter with the top weights being separated by only two ounces in the boater division.
Jet boater, Kevin Majane, clinched the victory by braving the rapids up north and the key to his victory was finding some largemouth bass in predominantly smallmouth waters. Majane’s limit was just shy of the ten pound mark, weighing in at 9 pounds, 15 ounces and his fish were caught on a shakeyhead rigged with a plastic worm around slack water. Dave Miller finished second with a bag weighing only an ounce less than Majane’s. Tim Miles and Ed Snider tied for third place with a limit of fish weighing 9-13, a singular ounce behind Miller’s second place effort. Although they had the same weight the pair of anglers caught their fish very differently. Miles caught a limit early in a creek off the main lake on a shakeyhead worm and upgraded throughout the day on shallow diving crankbaits while Snider took his jet boat up to the rapids and caught smallmouth on a tube and swimbait.
In the co-angler division “Big Fish” Bryan Mitchell continued his winning ways this season with his second victory. On a tough fishing day with many boats retreading community waters, Mitchell slowed down and caught 9 pounds, 11 ounces of fish on a plastic worm rigged either weightless or on a light shakeyhead. Second place went to Eddie Yee thanks to a topwater bait and some late day heroics which snagged him a nice largemouth at the end of the day contributing to his 9 pound, 7 ounce bag. Paul Mason finished in third place with a bag weighing 8-15 and was helped by a lunker weighing in at 3 pounds, 7 ounces.
