Recap
FOBA changed it’s normal routine a little bit by kicking off the 2018 season with a trip to Lake Gaston. A cold spring and the earlier than normal tournament date made for some challenging fishing conditions. Anglers found water temperatures anywhere from 54 to 62 degrees depending on location and time of day. Clarity varied from moderately clear to stained to heavily stained depending on location, closer to the main lake typically meant clearer water. The cold weather broke for a few days with warm, sunny, and breezy conditions dominating the practice days and 1st tournament day. Things changed drastically on the final tournament day with steady rain, high winds, and temperatures dropping into the 30s...Some anglers even reported sleet and wintry mix during the day.
On Day 1, Logan Summers led the boater division with a 5-bass limit weighing 12-5. Greg Greene and Tim Roberts weighed in 10-15 and 10-12 for 2nd and 3rd. Joe Pautler weighed in the Day 1 lunker at 4-2. In the Co-Angler division, Zack Showman caught the only limit of the day at 11-6. Paul Stecher and Lowell Clemons rounded out the top 3 with 8-2 and 8-1. Lunker was split between Zack Showman and Paul Stecher who each weighed in a bass at 4-13.
On Day 2, Tim Roberts made the right adjustments and took home the win with an impressive limit weighing 15-6 that brought his total to 26-2. His bag also included the Day 2 lunker of 5-12. Tim has now won the spring Gaston tournament in back-to-back years. Greg Greene turned in another solid limit of 11-6 to finish in 2nd place with 22-5. Dave Miller made a big move into the money with a 12-0 limit to finish in 3rd place with 21-3. Day 1 leader Logan Summers weighed in a small limit and fell off the podium. On the Co-Angler side, Zack Showman once again turned in a limit of 10-0 to wrap up yet another Lake Gaston victory with 21-6. This win is Zack’s 3rd in a row on and 7th overall on Lake Gaston alone. Paul Stecher brought in 8-4 to hold on to 2nd place with 16-6 total. Zack Parkent caught the only other limit of the tournament at 8-9 to jump up the standings into 3rd place. Lowell Clemons fell off the podium after weighing only 2 fish on the final day.
As always, a variety of techniques were successful. The most common baits mentioned in the post tournament reports were shakeyheads and other finesse techniques...With spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, jigs, and jerkbaits also getting mentioned. In total, 184 bass were weighed in with 183 being release alive for a 99.5% live release rate. The Per-Angler average of 6.1 fish for 12.01 lbs (over 2 tournament days) is down slightly from ‘normal’ Gaston tournaments in the spring, but it was still a fairly good tournament overall.
