Last Thursday I was working from home and got a quick glimpse of the sun and said "Screw it, I'm going fishing!". This was at 3PM almost on the dot. By 3:30 I had the boat in the water on the Marshyhope and at 3:35, made my first cast (one thing to love about the shore, I can get the boat hooked up and be on the water in exactly 8.8 miles).

Fishing was slow. I'm still trying to figure the river out, but I'll say this about the Marshyhope - I can see why people will make the run from Sharptown on the Nanticoke up to Federalsburg. It's a fishy looking place. I saw about a 3lber cruising the shore line and found a couple of potential bed sites. Water temperatures were down around 60 (the Saturday before they were close to 65). I ran down river about a mile and found a couple of bedding fish (saw one bed but couldn't make out the fish on the white spot, the second bed was on a similar tree - never saw the bed but got moved out of it three times) but was never able to get them to commit to a bait. Finally, around 6PM and time to head home for dinner, I flipped up onto the corner of a dock front and set the hook into a 4.5+. All of 22" on the Golden Rule and fat at that so she may have been bigger.

I'd be back on the water right now, but I'm sitting on the deck of our rental place in Kill Devil Hills looking out at the Atlantic but if I get back early enough Saturday to get the lawn mowed I'll be on the water again Sunday. The shore rivers are a great way to get away from the crowds and there are some quality fish over on that side of the bay.

I was invited to fish this team tournament by Gary Rank- he's retired Air Force and his wife is an active Major General there on base. She is about to retire as well. This was his 'Send Off' for moving off Bolling AFB and up to Deep Creek for good. Congrats to both Gary and his wife on great tours of duty in the Air Force.

Launch - 6:00am, Weigh-in 3:00pm
River temps in the mid 60's and very stained to muddy (except Blue Plains area)
Tournament limit - 7 bass over 15"
Fish caught - 23 bass with 4 keepers from 16" to around 24" (that's right... 24" and 7.6 pounds) - Total weight - more than enough... but honestly, the whole day was a blurr after landing that damn pig. I'm lucky I didn't fall in the river.

Well... I finally broke the 7-pound mark for a LM and I did it during a tournament.
I drove to Bolling AFB at 4:15am and took a wrong turn - ended up on Rt.1 and U-Turned it at Pennsylvania Ave but there was no exit to get back in the right direction. I ended up having to backtrack 10 miles before I could get squared away... I hate DC. Gary met me at the ramp and I carted my stuff down to his boat.

We checked in and had a KK and a cup of coffee and off to the race we went. We fished areas from the Wilson Bridge north that Gary had found during his 'Endless Summer' of bass fishing as a retired man.
The first area he took me to looked great. We pull up to the 'spot' and on my 7th cast with the jig/pig "BOOM" the line jumps and Wible set the hook. I thought it was a catfish for sure because it felt like it was rolling around like a cat always does. Not the case - we both saw the flash of green as the fish approached the boat and it was a HUGE bass.

HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!

I worked the fish into Gary's net and the 'Big Fish Pot' was ours for sure. She went 7.60 pounds on a 'Cull-em Rite' scale.
My skin was buzzing and my hands were shaking. I caught a seven!!!!!!!

In the box it went. We tried for another 45 minutes but got no addition love from the area and the wind was really picking up making it difficult to hold the boat still. We ran to spot #2 - Gary starts slamming fish on a Texas Yamamoto craw but they were all short ones - 13", 14", 14.5", 14.75". I couldn't get bit on my stuff so I borrowed a craw from him and wouldn't you know :) I caught a 16"... in the box. After an hour of scouring that area for another keeper (Gary caught 20+ dinks) we rolled out and back to spot #1. At this point, that whole area was just whitecaps and chocolate milk so I'm truely glad we got it when we did. We bailed on that and ran up to spot #3 - Gary said it was out of the wind and worth trying.
We pulled in to the hot spot and the water was ripping. We worked up a bank to an overhanging tree and I could see a big orange goldfish swimming around in it. I pitched my jig into the branches of the tree and let it fall on a slack line. When it hit the bottom - 6 feet - I hopped it and DOINK - a 4+ grabbed it and came screaming out after the hookset! In the net and in the box. We fished that area for a few and I nailed 3 more but all were too short to keep. We slid over to another overhanging tree - first cast DOINK... a 5+ in the net and in the box. I looked at Gary and said "We're going to win this tournament" and he said "I know..." and we were right. We caught a couple more small fish and that was it - 4 keepers:

We crushed 1st place and 'big fish' for a total of $1100 and also got two sacks of tackle etc. It's good to be da kings.

Thanks foor a great 'River Rat' trip, Gary. Representing for FOBA...

It was a tough day on the water with the 15" size limit. Lots of 13" and 14.5" fish caught, but not many keepers. We had 10 boaters and 11 Co-Anglers with a total of nine keepers caught. The water was 65 degrees at launch and warmed up to about 69 by weighin. The water in Occoquan was stained with maybe 6 inches to a foot of visibility. I heard but did not witness that the main river was very rough by the end of the day. The results will be up soon.

I witnessed my first (two) snakeheads on the river in Occoquan. I saw them plain as day floating about 3 inches below the water in about one foot of water. One was about 15 inches and the other about 12. I hooked up with one twice but it shook the hook both times (sliderhead). Pretty cool...

Hey guys,
I went fishing..... I went to Allen Pond in Bowie couple of days the week before last week to eat my lunch and relax. Its less than a mile from my office I usually eat at my desk. (not smart) I saw a lot of bass spawning a couple in the 5-6 range. So last Saturday I bought my liscense and decided to go fishing during lunch this week. Wednesday the water was very stained from the rain over the weekend and it was windy not clear like last week and no bass on beds like the previous thursday-friday. I missed a couple of bites and went back to work. Thursday was raining still no bass back on beds, caught two small ones and back to work, Friday awsome weather water was still stained no bass on beds caught two and mised 2 or 3 bites. There must be some kind of oxygen issue or something because there were quite a few dead bluegill/crappie spread around the shoreline. Some good bite maks in a few of them, looks like there are some large snappers there. Should be great next week if this weather holds out. I will let you know...

got out to lake wiles today. i started off using a texas rigged BPS drop shot worm. i would throw it out a little ways and jiggle the worm in gradually. i did this for an hour with only 1 taker. he weighed about a pound. then i moved to the opposite side of the lake where there is a pretty empty, soft dirt bottom. i continued the same pattern for about 10 minutes before i got a really nice bite. i set the hook and the fish came off. this happened 4 more times before i finally got a good hookset. i fought her for about 2 minutes and then jumped INTO the water to get the fish. it ended up being my biggest fish so far out of that lake. im gonna under-estimate the weight to be about 3 pounds. the pic really doesnt do the fish justice. my grandpa was with me by the lake and thank god he was so i could have these pics. (although he isnt the best photographer) i still love him to death ha ha ! i hope you enjoyed my report. (pics are attached below, i hope)
