It's Jason Quinn on the right.
I met Jason at the Lake Wylie Bait and Tackle store in Lake Wylie, SC.
It's apparently a new store that was a bar previously, with the bar still in the tackle store.

My friend and I did some bank fishing of Lake Wylie on Sunday, January 1, in McDowell Park, but we didn't catch anything. Wind was 15-20 mph, making things a little uncomfortable. Air temp was around 60. We used all types of lures. but no bites. We figured they were staging in deep water.

I was hoping to catch a ride with a boater, and fish back-of-the boat, but I didn't connect with anyone.

After fishing, we decided to take a ride across the bridge into the town of Lake Wylie. Saw the tackle store, and decided to stop.

Nice store with excellent inventory and competitive prices. Nice friendly folks.

On Jason's tips. he said that he caught about 30 fish on jigs, spoons, and blade baits. The fish were deep at 35-feet. Not much we could do without a boat. Jason was very open about thr lures and techniques.

We spent over an hour in the store, talking with Jason, and John Paul with the brand new Legend boat. Beautiful boat !

On Monday, my friend and I fished Lake Julian in Asheville. Julian is a thermal lake, warmed by water from an electric power plant. We fished while the wives toured the Biltmore mansion. Very windy, and also much colder. No bites there either.

Seems like we had some good locations for summer fishing, not January.

Last year I tried some of the Daiwa Samurai line. The smaller sizes 6-20, were so thin, they could not stand up to any abrasion at all. That said, I use the 50 Samurai, same as 10 mono, and it is fine at that weight, though I check it all the time for nicks. I would highly recommend the higher weights in the Samurai. So, I tried some of the new Berkley NanoFil, 12 lbs., about the same as 6 mono. 12 lb. is the highest it goes and it is not recommended for level winds, spinning reels only. It's definitely different. It is a smooth single strand, white, stiff. Stiffer than new braid, but very pliable. I grabbed a yard and scraped it over a painted wooden door jam, a tree limb, and a rock. Acknowledged, I rubbed pretty hard, trying to mimic the force a five pound bass would inflict if you had to drag her out of rocks or lumber. After each rub, the line was frayed to some extent, getting worse from the painted door jam to the tree and then the rock. I didn't think any of the fraying would be enough to cost me a fish, but if you rubbed the same place several times, I believe the line would weaken. The trouble with these super thin lines is they are so thin, they can't stand up any real abuse. Yes, it did cast like a rocket in back yard casting. I would not use this line in a situation where it was likely to come into contact with trees, rocks, abutments, etc. However, in open water it would be excellent I think...like rattle traps at Anna. The real downside is that they recommend using a true double Albright knot to attach a leader. It usually takes two people and a raccoon to tie a double Albright. It's nothing you are going to do quickly out on the boat unless you have done it a thousand times, and have a pet raccoon. To attach a lure, a hook, or snap, they do a double palomar where they go back through the granny knot a second time before putting the loop over the hook and drawing it tight. I'll use what I bought, one spool, but I'm not rushing out the door to BPS to fill my reels with NanoFil.

I am deleting the other post and putting everything in here since some info has been updated. Please READ the section on the NOAA registrations!!!!

Licenses need to fish the full 2012 TX Schedule:

MD Non-Tidal (freshwater)
MD Bay Sport (MD portion of the bay and it's tidal tributaries, also works for tidal water in VA)
DC
VA Freshwater (works for NC portions of Lake Gaston too)

You do NOT have to buy a VA Saltwater to fish the Chickahominey, the MD Bay Sport reciprocates.

NOAA Registration information

Ok, this is a little complicated so please read thoroughly!

The NOAA National Saltwater Angler Registry is a requirement for anyone fishing coastal waterways, which includes tidal tributaries like the Potomac River, Chesapeake Bay, CA Delta, etc.... Basically anything that is the ocean or connected to the ocean (tidal). The bottom line is that it is required for where we fish!

As of last year, if you buy a saltwater fishing license from any state (except Hawaii) you are automatically registered with NOAA. The license has to specifically say SALTWATER on it..

Some states, including MD and VA, have incorporated the registration process into their licenses for free....but the catch is that you are only registered in that state. So our MD Bay Sport registers us with MD's Saltwater Angler Registry. Since VA has incorporated the law too, you can register for free.

The problem comes with DC, they did not incorporate the registration so to be legal you have register with NOAA nationally. There is a $15 fee for this. When you do this you can also register for any other state on the list for no extra charge.

We have had to pay the $15 since we typically never buy a Saltwater license to fish our tournaments (remember that the MD BaySport is NOT a saltwater license). This funny thing is that I don't believe there is even a check-box for DC when you register, you just check off anywhere you will fish (I just check them all, doesn't cost any extra).

So, if you get the typical compliment of licenses you will have to register with VA (free) AND Nationally for DC and other waters ($15). The links to all the registration sites are at the bottom of this post.

Clear? .

If you have any questions you can ask me, I'll also go over it all at the meeting on Wednesday.

MD Registration (not needed if you buy the MD BaySport): http://dnr.maryland.gov/swregistry.asp
Some of the units are marked "Free Shipping." In addition, I do not think there is any MD sales tax on internet orders from Cabellas. Gary
